Luis Suárez joins Atlético Madrid - Free transfer from Barcelona
Luis Suárez has officially left Barcelona and will join Atlético Madrid subject to passing his medical. Both clubs announced the transfer on Wednesday evening. Suárez was heavily linked with a move to Juventus but the striker could not procure an Italian passport. Instead, Atlético sold Álvaro Morata in a deal that will eventually be worth €45 million and replaced him with Suárez.
The Uruguayan striker had his contract, which runs until 2021 terminate at Barça and will join Atlético on a free transfer. Barcelona, however, could earn in the region of €4 million in bonuses—€2 million for every time Atlético reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League over the next two seasons. Suárez will leave the club as the second-highest scorer in history with 198 goals scored in 283 games.
