Romelu Lukaku reunited with Jose Mourinho - Roma loan striker from Chelsea
It is now official. Romelu Lukaku and coach José Mourinho are reunited at AS Roma. The 30-year-old striker will join the Serie A side on loan from Chelsea for the rest of the season. Although neither club has announced the deal, the transfer has already been registered with the league. Lukaku remains under contract until 2026 at Chelsea.
The loan fee will be €5.8 million, and there is no option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season. Lukaku is expected to earn about €7.5m at Roma until the end of the season. The Belgian striker, therefore, returns to Italy, where he played for Inter Milan last season and scored 14 goals and seven assists in 37 games.
There is no doubt that Lukaku has enjoyed some of his best football under Mourinho, however. The 30-year-old has scored 33 goals in 76 games under Mourinho. Furthermore, Lukaku is already the second addition to the attack for Roma. The club from the Italian capital previously signed Sardar Azmoun from Bayer Leverkusen.
Lukaku to Roma: Why Mourinho was keen to add the Belgian striker
Mourinho has been pushing for an additional striker since Tammy Abraham went down with an ACL injury. In Andrea Belotti, the Serie A club has only one center-forward available in the squad. In Lukaku, Mourinho has now added a proven Serie A goalscorer to his squad. The 30-year-old has scored 57 goals in just 97 Serie A games. Furthermore, Lukaku’s style of play should more than compensate for Abraham’s absence this season.
