Tomás Pochettino leaves Austin FC - Joins River Plate on loan for one season
Austin FC have loaned out Designated Player (DP) midfielder Tomás Pochettino to Argentine giants River Plate. The Major League Soccer side made the transfer official on Monday morning. Pochettino made 31 appearances for Austin FC during the 2021 MLS season, 26 of which were starts scoring two goals and recording two assists.
Pochettino joined Austin FC for $2.5 million ahead of the club's inaugural season from Atlético Talleres. But last week, Austin signed club captain Alexander Ring to a DP contract. At that point, Pochettino was already in negotiations with River Plate, appearing adamant that he would want to return to Argentina. The transfer ensures that Austin are now salary cap compliant. Pochettino is Austin's third most expensive signing in club history.
